Proactive transfer and acoustic similarity in short-term paired-assoicate learning

Interference is the most prominent explanation of forgetting in verbal long-term memory (LTM). Interference theory generally holds that forgetting is due to the competition of associations learned during the retention interval rather than to the decay of memory traces. Proactive interference results when the competing associations are learned prior to the criterion associations, and retroactive interference results when the competing associations are learned after the criterion associations. Further explanation of retroactive inhibition (RI) and proactive inhibition (PI) in paired-associate (P-A) learning is found in the extinction hypothesis of interference theory. According to the hypothesis, interference is due to unlearning or extinction of first list or prior learned responses during the learning of second list associations. Barnes and Underwood (1959) gave support to the extinction hypothesis by demonstrating that as the number of trials on the second list increased there was an increase in second list associations and a corresponding decrease in first list associations. With the passage of time, spontaneous recovery of the extinguished first list items occurs, thus explaining the commonly observed increase over time in PI (more interference from the first list) and the decrease in RI (first list responses become more available)

Combining diverse systems for handwritten text line recognition

    Get PDF
In this paper, we present a recognition system for on-line handwritten texts acquired from a whiteboard. The system is based on the combination of several individual classifiers of diverse nature. Recognizers based on different architectures (hidden Markov models and bidirectional long short-term memory networks) and on different sets of features (extracted from on-line and off-line data) are used in the combination. In order to increase the diversity of the underlying classifiers and fully exploit the current state-of-the-art in cursive handwriting recognition, commercial recognition systems have been included in the combined system, leading to a final word level accuracy of 86.16%. This value is significantly higher than the performance of the best individual classifier (81.26%

Robot Chef Adoption: The New Industry Strategy To Combat Labor

    Get PDF
Through interviews, the authors investigated how robot chefs can be implemented in order to strengthen the business flow of a restaurant and what value the adoption would bring to the market. Results showed that the ability of the robot chef lacking human error, maintaining food quality, being reliable labor, and generating costs savings make it a desired asset to have in any restaurant. Despite its adoption initially being feared by consumers, once the labor cost savings are transferred over to menu prices and quality maintenance is observed, consumer acceptance of the adoption is predicted to surge. The findings suggest that social media advertising of the robot chef and its services are likely to further entice higher levels of business volume from the growing Generation Z and Generation Alpha consumers in the market. Restaurant companies should understand the values that robot chefs can offer to help strengthen their market and service quality

Photon number resolution using a time-multiplexed single-photon detector

Photon number resolving detectors are needed for a variety of applications including linear-optics quantum computing. Here we describe the use of time-multiplexing techniques that allows ordinary single photon detectors, such as silicon avalanche photodiodes, to be used as photon number-resolving detectors. The ability of such a detector to correctly measure the number of photons for an incident number state is analyzed. The predicted results for an incident coherent state are found to be in good agreement with the results of a proof-of-principle experimental demonstration.Comment: REVTeX4, 6 pages, 8 eps figures, v2: minor changes, v3: changes in response to referee report, appendix added, 1 reference adde

Photon number resolving detection using time-multiplexing

Detectors that can resolve photon number are needed in many quantum information technologies. In order to be useful in quantum information processing, such detectors should be simple, easy to use, and be scalable to resolve any number of photons, as the application may require great portability such as in quantum cryptography. Here we describe the construction of a time-multiplexed detector, which uses a pair of standard avalanche photodiodes operated in Geiger mode. The detection technique is analysed theoretically and tested experimentally using a pulsed source of weak coherent light.Comment: 20 pages, 14 figures, accepted to Journal of Modern Optic

A Multitiered Holistic Approach to Traffic Safety: Educating Children, Novice Teen Drivers and Parents, and Crash Investigators to Reduce Roadway Crashes - An Eight-Year Introspective Project

    Get PDF
The Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF), developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), was adopted as an effective injury reduction model for reducing driver injury crashes on community roadways. Kean University and the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety (NJDHTS) adopted crash prevention strategies involving education and enforcement outreach. First, an effective K-12 traffic safety program was established for supporting driver education training and then crash investigation training, and a statewide traffic safety specialist certification was promoted within the law enforcement community. This successful outreach initiative also involves community representation, including law enforcement personnel and parents of novice drivers. Best practices have been established in New Jersey by four traffic safety specialist (TSS)-Level 2 leaders, with over 100 more TSS officers waiting to qualify for this second tier. Future plans involve an outreach program for officers to develop traffic safety programs in their communities while qualifying for the TSS-Level 2 designation

Heralded generation of entangled photon pairs

Entangled photons are a crucial resource for quantum communication and linear optical quantum computation. Unfortunately, the applicability of many photon-based schemes is limited due to the stochastic character of the photon sources. Therefore, a worldwide effort has focused in overcoming the limitation of probabilistic emission by generating two-photon entangled states conditioned on the detection of auxiliary photons. Here we present the first heralded generation of photon states that are maximally entangled in polarization with linear optics and standard photon detection from spontaneous parametric down-conversion. We utilize the down-conversion state corresponding to the generation of three photon pairs, where the coincident detection of four auxiliary photons unambiguously heralds the successful preparation of the entangled state. This controlled generation of entangled photon states is a significant step towards the applicability of a linear optics quantum network, in particular for entanglement swapping, quantum teleportation, quantum cryptography and scalable approaches towards photonics-based quantum computing

Increased autophagy accelerates colchicine-induced muscle toxicity

Colchicine treatment is associated with an autophagic vacuolar myopathy in human patients. The presumed mechanism of colchicine-induced myotoxicity is the destabilization of the microtubule system that leads to impaired autophagosome-lysosome fusion and the accumulation of autophagic vacuoles. Using the MTOR inhibitor rapamycin we augmented colchicine's myotoxic effect by increasing the autophagic flux; this resulted in an acute myopathy with muscle necrosis. In contrast to myonecrosis induced by cardiotoxin, myonecrosis induced by a combination of rapamycin and colchicine was associated with accumulation of autophagic substrates such as LC3-II and SQSTM1; as a result, autophagic vacuoles accumulated in the center of myofibers, where LC3-positive autophagosomes failed to colocalize with the lysosomal protein marker LAMP2. A similar pattern of central LC3 accumulation and myonecrosis is seen in human patients with colchicine myopathy, many of whom have been treated with statins (HMGCR/HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors) in addition to colchicine. In mice, cotreatment with colchicine and simvastatin also led to muscle necrosis and LC3 accumulation, suggesting that, like rapamycin, simvastatin activates autophagy. Consistent with this, treatment of mice with four different statin medications enhanced autophagic flux in skeletal muscle in vivo. Polypharmacy is a known risk factor for toxic myopathies; our data suggest that some medication combinations may simultaneously activate upstream autophagy signaling pathways while inhibiting the degradation of these newly synthesized autophagosomes, resulting in myotoxicity
